Countries by Rural population

India ranks first with a rural population of 937,610,709, nearly double that of second-ranked China at 480,535,177. At the other end, 12 countries including Bahrain, Singapore, and Kuwait record a rural population of exactly zero. The gap across 216 countries spans from nearly one billion to nothing.

Analysis

This metric measures the total number of people living in rural areas in each country, expressed as an absolute count. Rural population refers to people living in rural areas as defined by national statistical offices; it is calculated as the difference between total population and urban population. Aggregations of urban and rural population may not add up to total population because of different country coverages. The unit is an absolute headcount, where a higher value indicates a larger rural population. Data come from the World Bank World Development Indicators, indicator code SP.RUR.TOTL, for the reference year 2024. The dataset covers 216 countries, with 100% of data points from the most recent seven years, and 100% classified as official data. The indicator has 20 extreme outliers at the 3-sigma threshold, and an average year-over-year change of 1.4%, indicating high stability.

The top of the ranking is dominated by large, populous countries in Asia and Africa. India leads at rank 1 with 937,610,709 rural residents, followed by China at rank 2 with 480,535,177. Pakistan ranks 3rd at 152,838,397 and Indonesia 4th at 116,936,040, with Bangladesh close behind at rank 5 with 116,845,100. Ethiopia ranks 6th at 100,864,234 and Nigeria 7th at 86,148,256. The United States appears at rank 8 with 67,597,808, reflecting its large total population even though it is a highly urbanized country. Egypt ranks 9th at 66,659,375 and Viet Nam 10th at 62,117,455. High absolute rural populations generally reflect large total populations rather than low urbanization rates alone.

Several counterintuitive placements appear in the middle of the ranking. Italy, a high-income European country, ranks 29th with 17,918,820 rural residents, placing it ahead of Malawi (rank 30, 17,915,742) by a margin of fewer than 3,000 people. Germany ranks 35th at 15,015,329 and France 39th at 14,532,968, both ahead of many African nations. South Korea ranks 55th at 9,745,630, just ahead of Japan at rank 56 with 9,682,263, despite Japan's much larger total population. At the lower end, countries like San Marino rank 204th with just 966 rural residents, and 12 countries including Kuwait (rank 205), Singapore (rank 205), and Monaco (rank 205) report zero rural population, reflecting complete urbanization as defined by their national statistical offices.

A key limitation of this metric is that rural classification is determined by each country's national statistical office using its own definitions, which vary significantly across countries. Because the rural population is derived as total population minus urban population, any inconsistency or variation in how urban areas are defined will directly affect rural counts. The source note explicitly states that aggregations of urban and rural population may not add up to total population because of different country coverages. Rankings reflect absolute size, not share of population, so large countries rank high regardless of urbanization rates. The 20 extreme statistical outliers identified at the 3-sigma threshold are expected given the enormous range from 0 to 937,610,709. Comparisons across countries should account for these definitional differences.

Methodology

Metric: Countries by Rural Population. Data source: World Bank World Development Indicators, indicator code SP.RUR.TOTL. Reference year: 2024. Unit: absolute headcount of rural residents. As defined in the source note, rural population refers to people living in rural areas as defined by national statistical offices; it is calculated as the difference between total population and urban population; aggregation of urban and rural population may not add up to total population because of different country coverages. Coverage: 216 countries, all with data from within the last seven years (100% recency), and 100% of data points classified as official quality. The dataset contains 20 extreme outliers at the 3-sigma threshold. The value range spans 0 to 937,610,709, a spread of 999%. Average year-over-year change is 1.4%, confirming high stability. Higher values are ranked as better under this metric.
