Countries by Merchandise imports (current US$)

The United States ranks first in merchandise imports with $3.36 trillion in 2024, more than double second-ranked China at $2.58 trillion. At the other end, Tuvalu recorded just $25 million, placing 207th. The gap between first and last spans over 13 million percent, reflecting the extreme concentration of global goods trade among a small number of large economies.

Analysis

Merchandise imports measures the total value of goods whose economic ownership transfers from a non-resident to a resident, expressed in current US dollars with no adjustment for price changes. Per the World Bank source note, this indicator excludes goods under merchanting, non-monetary gold, and parts of travel, construction, and government goods and services not included elsewhere. The data comes from the World Bank World Development Indicators, indicator code TM.VAL.MRCH.CD.WT, for the year 2024. Coverage is broad: 207 countries are included, 203 of which (98.1%) have data for the latest year, and 205 of 207 (99.0%) have data from within the last seven years. All datapoints are classified as official-quality. The dataset contains 30 extreme outliers as identified by a 3-standard-deviation threshold, and the average year-over-year change is 13.8%.

The top of the ranking is dominated by large, highly integrated trading economies. The United States leads at $3.36 trillion (rank 1), followed by China at $2.58 trillion (rank 2) and Germany at $1.42 trillion (rank 3). The United Kingdom ($816 billion, rank 4) and the Netherlands ($814 billion, rank 5) are nearly tied, reflecting the Netherlands' role as a major European entry point for goods. France ($750 billion, rank 6), Japan ($743 billion, rank 7), India ($718 billion, rank 8), and Hong Kong SAR ($704 billion, rank 9) round out the upper tier. Mexico at $644 billion (rank 10) and Korea at $632 billion (rank 11) also place in the top tier, underscoring the importance of manufacturing-linked trade corridors.

The middle of the ranking reveals some counterintuitive placements. Belgium (rank 15, $514 billion) outranks Spain (rank 16, $472 billion) and Canada (rank 13, $574 billion) despite differences in population size. Singapore (rank 17, $459 billion) and Vietnam (rank 18, $381 billion) both rank above much larger economies such as Brazil (rank 26, $278 billion) and Australia (rank 25, $296 billion), suggesting the role of export-processing and re-export activity in inflating import totals. At rank 75, the Democratic Republic of Congo records $26.6 billion, while Nigeria — one of Africa's largest economies — ranks 65th at $41.3 billion. In the lower half, small island and landlocked states cluster near the bottom, with Tuvalu last at $25 million (rank 207), Marshall Islands at $100 million (rank 205), and Nauru at $63 million (rank 206).

Several limitations apply to this dataset. Because values are in current US dollars with no price adjustment, year-over-year changes partly reflect currency fluctuations and commodity price movements rather than real changes in trade volumes. The 13.8% average annual change underscores this volatility. Countries with large re-export sectors — such as Hong Kong SAR (rank 9) and Singapore (rank 17) — may show import values disproportionate to domestic consumption. Reporting practices vary across countries, and data for some economies may be estimated or lagged. The 30 extreme outliers flagged at the 3-standard-deviation level suggest that a small number of very large economies significantly skew the distribution. Rankings should be interpreted with these factors in mind.

Methodology

Data is sourced from the World Bank World Development Indicators, indicator code TM.VAL.MRCH.CD.WT, for the reference year 2024. Per the source definition: merchandise imports includes goods whose economic ownership is changed from a non-resident to a resident and that are not included in the following specific categories: goods under merchanting, non-monetary gold, and parts of travel, construction, and government goods and services n.i.e. This indicator is expressed in current prices, meaning no adjustment has been made to account for price changes. The ranking covers 207 countries. Coverage is 99.0% for recency (205/207 countries have data from the last seven years), and 98.1% of countries have data for 2024 specifically. All 100% of datapoints are classified as official quality, exceeding the 70% threshold. The dataset exhibits 30 extreme outliers under a 3-standard-deviation test, and the average year-over-year change is 13.8%, within the 50% volatility threshold. Values range from $25 million (Tuvalu) to $3.36 trillion (United States), a spread of over 13 million percent.
