China follows in second place at $3.25 trillion, with the remaining 190 countries spread across a range that spans seven orders of magnitude. The gap reflects the extreme concentration of global trade activity among a small number of large economies.

The indicator is expressed in current prices, meaning no adjustment has been made to account for price changes over time. The ranking covers 192 countries using World Bank World Development Indicators (indicator code BM.GSR.GNFS.CD), with data primarily from 2024. Of the 192 countries included, 185 (96.4%) have data from the last seven years, and 100% of data points are classified as official. The dataset contains 28 extreme outliers identified at the three-standard-deviation threshold.

The top of the ranking is dominated by large, highly integrated economies. The United States holds first place at $4.14 trillion, followed by China at $3.25 trillion (rank 2) and Germany at $1.76 trillion (rank 3). The United Kingdom ($1.17 trillion, rank 4) and France ($1.07 trillion, rank 5) round out the top five. Notably, Singapore (rank 9, $786.0 billion) and Hong Kong SAR (rank 12, $723.1 billion) both place ahead of much larger economies by population, reflecting their roles as major trade entrepots. The top 10 countries alone account for a disproportionate share of total global import value.

The middle of the ranking includes a wide variety of economies. Poland ranks 20th at $442.1 billion, while South Africa (rank 44, $119.9 billion) and Egypt (rank 46, $100.4 billion) represent Africa's largest importers by this measure. Ireland places 15th at $631.9 billion, ranking above much larger economies including Spain (rank 17, $567.4 billion) and Canada (rank 11, $733.8 billion) relative to its population size. At the lower end, small island states dominate: Tuvalu (rank 192, $57.4 million), Nauru (rank 191, $180.9 million), and Marshall Islands (rank 190, $206.0 million) record the three lowest values. The spread between rank 1 and rank 192 is 7,207,124.9%.

Several limitations apply to this metric. Because values are expressed in current US dollars with no price adjustment, exchange rate fluctuations can substantially affect a country's ranking from year to year without reflecting real changes in trade volume. The consistency check shows that only 152 of 192 countries (79.2%) have data from the latest reference year (2024), meaning some values reflect earlier years. Countries with significant informal trade, unreported services, or limited statistical capacity may be systematically undercounted. Territories and special administrative regions such as Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, and the Cayman Islands are included as separate entries, which affects comparisons with their sovereign counterparts.
