Countries by Merchandise imports by the reporting economy (current US$)

The United States ranked first in merchandise imports in 2023, recording $3.08 trillion — more than any other economy in the world. At the other end, Nauru ranked 205th with just $71.3 million in imports, a gap of over 43 million times. This range reflects the vast differences in economic size, population, and trade integration across 205 countries.

Analysis

This metric measures total merchandise imports by the reporting economy from the rest of the world, as reported in the IMF's Direction of Trade database. Data are in current U.S. dollars. The indicator covers physical goods crossing borders and does not include services trade. All values are in absolute current US dollars, meaning larger economies with higher trade volumes will rank higher regardless of import intensity relative to GDP. The dataset covers 205 countries for the reference year 2023, with 100% of data points classified as official quality and 100% of countries reporting data from within the last seven years. Viability checks identified 30 extreme outliers beyond three standard deviations, reflecting the wide dispersion in absolute trade volumes across economies of vastly different sizes.

The top of the ranking is dominated by large, advanced economies and major manufacturing hubs. The United States (rank 1) recorded $3.08 trillion in merchandise imports, followed by China (rank 2) at $2.46 trillion and Germany (rank 3) at $1.47 trillion. The Netherlands (rank 4, $838 billion) ranks notably high relative to its size, consistent with its role as a major European trade gateway. Japan (rank 5, $785.5 billion) and France (rank 6, $783.4 billion) are closely matched. India (rank 8, $666.5 billion) and Hong Kong SAR, China (rank 9, $655.4 billion) both rank ahead of Korea (rank 10, $640.4 billion), reflecting India's large domestic demand base and Hong Kong's position as a re-export hub.

In the middle tier, countries such as Ukraine (rank 51, $63.5 billion), Bangladesh (rank 53, $61.3 billion), and Kazakhstan (rank 54, $61.2 billion) cluster closely together despite substantial differences in economic structure. Marshall Islands (rank 80) records $19.5 billion, an unusually large figure for a territory of its size, which may reflect re-export or ship registry activity rather than domestic consumption. At the lower end of the ranking, small island states and landlocked nations dominate: Tuvalu (rank 204) imported $72.7 million and Nauru (rank 205) imported $71.3 million. Gibraltar (rank 104, $12.1 billion) ranks higher than several much larger economies, which may relate to its status as a port and re-export center.

Several limitations affect the interpretation of this metric. Because values are in current US dollars, exchange rate movements can significantly shift rankings from year to year without reflecting real changes in trade volumes. The average year-over-year change across the dataset is 26.5%, indicating meaningful volatility. Countries with managed or pegged exchange rates may show different patterns than those with floating currencies. Reporting is drawn from the IMF's Direction of Trade database, and data quality or completeness may vary for countries with limited statistical capacity or those in conflict, such as Syria (rank 155, $3.07 billion), Somalia (rank 148, $4.02 billion), and Yemen (rank 142, $4.41 billion). The metric also does not distinguish between imports for domestic consumption and those destined for re-export, which can inflate rankings for entrepot economies.

Methodology

This ranking uses World Bank World Development Indicators indicator code TM.VAL.MRCH.WL.CD for the reference year 2023. The definition applied is as follows: merchandise imports by the reporting economy are the total merchandise imports by the reporting economy from the rest of the world, as reported in the IMF's Direction of Trade database. Data are in current U.S. dollars. The ranking covers 205 countries, all of which have data from within the last seven years (100% recency) and all of which are classified as official data quality (100%). Viability checks identified 30 extreme outliers at the three standard deviation threshold, driven by the enormous absolute spread between the highest value ($3.08 trillion, United States) and the lowest ($71.3 million, Nauru), a range of over 4.3 million percent. Average year-over-year volatility stands at 26.5%, below the 50% threshold for concern but still significant enough to affect year-to-year comparisons. Higher values indicate greater total merchandise imports and are treated as higher-ranked in this index.
