Countries by Merchandise exports (current US$)

China ranked first in merchandise exports in 2024 with $3.58 trillion, more than 1.7 times the value of second-ranked United States at $2.07 trillion. At the other end, Tuvalu recorded $0 in merchandise exports. The gap between top and bottom illustrates the extreme concentration of global goods trade among a small number of economies.

Analysis

This metric measures the total value of merchandise exports in current US dollars. According to the source definition, merchandise exports includes goods whose economic ownership is changed from a resident to a non-resident and that are not included in the following specific categories: goods under merchanting, non-monetary gold, and parts of travel, construction, and government goods and services n.i.e. This indicator is expressed in current prices, meaning no adjustment has been made to account for price changes. Values are absolute and higher figures indicate greater export volume. The dataset covers 207 countries, with 203 of 207 (98.1%) reporting data for the latest year 2024, and 205 of 207 (99.0%) having data from the last seven years. All datapoints are classified as official quality. The ranking contains 31 extreme outliers at the 3-sigma threshold, reflecting the very wide distribution of values.

The top of the ranking is dominated by large manufacturing economies and major trading hubs. China (rank 1) at $3.58 trillion stands well above all others. The United States (rank 2) follows at $2.07 trillion, with Germany (rank 3) at $1.68 trillion. The Netherlands (rank 4, $921 billion) and Japan (rank 5, $707 billion) round out the top five. Notable regional trading hubs appear high in the rankings: Hong Kong SAR, China (rank 8, $646 billion) and Singapore (rank 15, $506 billion) both exceed much larger economies by population. The top 20 countries account for the vast majority of global merchandise export value, and the range from rank 1 to rank 20 spans from $3.58 trillion down to $405 billion for Viet Nam.

The middle of the ranking shows a broad spread across emerging markets and commodity exporters. Kazakhstan (rank 44, $82 billion), Argentina (rank 45, $80 billion), and Slovenia (rank 46, $79 billion) cluster closely despite very different economic structures. Angola (rank 65, $39 billion) and Ecuador (rank 66, $34 billion) appear in similar positions to much larger economies. At the lower end, small island states and landlocked countries record minimal values. Tuvalu (rank 207) recorded $0, and several Pacific island and Caribbean states fall below $100 million. Guyana (rank 80, $19.8 billion) ranks notably high relative to its population size, as visible in the data. Faroe Islands (rank 150) reports $1.31 billion with a non-rounded figure, reflecting a different reporting methodology than most other entries.

Several limitations affect interpretation of this metric. Because values are in current prices with no inflation adjustment, year-over-year comparisons across different data vintages can be distorted by currency movements and price changes. Merchandise exports exclude services trade entirely, so economies with large services export sectors may appear lower than their overall trade position would suggest. Re-exporting economies such as Hong Kong SAR, China and Singapore may record high values that reflect transit trade rather than domestically produced goods. Two countries (Eritrea and one other) lack recent data within the last seven years. Reporting practices and customs valuation methods vary across countries, and some smaller territories use non-standard survey-based estimates, as evidenced by the Faroe Islands figure. Rankings for countries with very low or zero values, such as Tuvalu at $0, may reflect data gaps rather than true absence of exports.

Methodology

Data source: World Bank World Development Indicators, indicator code TX.VAL.MRCH.CD.WT. Data year: 2024. Unit: absolute value in current US dollars. Higher values indicate greater merchandise export volume. The metric is defined as follows: merchandise exports includes goods whose economic ownership is changed from a resident to a non-resident and that are not included in the following specific categories: goods under merchanting, non-monetary gold, and parts of travel, construction, and government goods and services n.i.e. This indicator is expressed in current prices, meaning no adjustment has been made to account for price changes. Coverage: 207 countries included; 203 of 207 (98.1%) have data for the latest year 2024; 205 of 207 (99.0%) have data from the last seven years. Data quality: 100% of datapoints are classified as official. The distribution is highly skewed, with 31 extreme outliers identified at the 3-sigma threshold and a value range of $0 to $3.58 trillion, representing a spread of 999%. Average year-over-year change across the dataset is 18.0%, within the 50% volatility threshold.
