Countries by Services, value added (current LCU)
Iran, Islamic Rep. ranks 1st in services value added at 107,155,091,924,882,000 current LCU, a figure more than 11 times larger than Indonesia's 9,690,648,900,000,000 LCU at rank 2. At the bottom, Marshall Islands records just 194,346,033 LCU at rank 203. The enormous numerical spread across 203 countries reflects the use of local currency units rather than a common denominator, making direct cross-country comparison of absolute values unreliable.

Analysis
This metric measures the value added by services industries in each country, expressed in current local currency units (LCU). According to the source definition, services industries correspond to ISIC (Rev. 4) divisions 45-99 and include wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles, hotels and restaurants, transport, storage and communication, financial intermediation, real estate, renting and business activities, public administration and defence, compulsory social security, education, health and social work, other community, social and personal services. The data comes from the World Bank World Development Indicators (indicator code NV.SRV.TOTL.CN) for the 2024 reference year. Coverage spans 203 countries, with 201 of 203 (99.0%) having data from the last seven years, and 100% of datapoints classified as official. Seven extreme outliers were identified at the 3-sigma threshold. The average year-over-year change across the dataset is 12.8%.
The top of the ranking is heavily influenced by currency scale and inflation. Iran (rank 1) records 107,155,091,924,882,000 LCU, far exceeding Indonesia (rank 2) at 9,690,648,900,000,000 LCU and Viet Nam (rank 3) at 4,876,381,188,950,400 LCU. Korea, Rep. follows at rank 4 with 1,470,206,000,000,000 LCU, and Colombia sits at rank 5 with 992,179,000,000,000 LCU. Large economies such as Japan (rank 8, 412,993,900,000,000 LCU), India (rank 13, 164,925,523,957,500 LCU), and Russian Federation (rank 16, 115,713,971,942,200 LCU) also appear in the upper tier. Countries with historically high inflation or large-denomination currencies tend to post very high LCU values regardless of real economic scale.
Notable anomalies appear mid-ranking. China (rank 21, 76,558,254,122,400 LCU) and the United States (rank 37, 18,092,318,398,000 LCU) rank well below several smaller economies in LCU terms, a direct result of their currencies having fewer zeros per unit of real value compared to high-inflation or large-denomination currency nations. Germany (rank 71, 2,772,517,000,000 LCU) and the United Kingdom (rank 76, 2,089,354,000,000 LCU) rank similarly low in absolute LCU terms despite being among the world's largest service economies. At the lower end, Marshall Islands (rank 203, 194,346,033 LCU) and Palau (rank 202, 206,910,139 LCU) record the smallest values, consistent with their very small population and economic size.
The primary limitation of this metric is that values are in current local currency units, making cross-country comparisons of absolute figures essentially meaningless without conversion to a common currency or adjustment for purchasing power. Countries with high inflation histories, such as Iran or Viet Nam, will mechanically rank near the top regardless of real services output. The dataset also shows a range spanning from 194,346,033 to 107,155,091,924,882,000, a spread of over 55 trillion percent, which the viability checks flag explicitly. Additionally, 85.7% of countries have data for the latest year (2024), meaning 29 countries rely on earlier estimates. Reporting methodologies and ISIC classification practices may also vary across national statistical agencies.
Methodology
Metric: Services, value added (current LCU). Data source: World Bank World Development Indicators, indicator code NV.SRV.TOTL.CN. Data year: 2024. Values are expressed in absolute current local currency units; higher values are ranked higher. The source definition states that services industries correspond to ISIC (Rev. 4) divisions 45-99 and include wholesale and retail trade, repair of motor vehicles, hotels and restaurants, transport, storage and communication, financial intermediation, real estate, renting and business activities, public administration and defence, compulsory social security, education, health and social work, other community, social and personal services. Country count: 203. Recency: 201/203 (99.0%) have data from the last seven years; 174/203 (85.7%) have data specifically for 2024. Data quality: 100% of datapoints are official. Seven extreme outliers were detected at the 3-sigma threshold. Average year-over-year change: 12.8%. The value range extends from 194,346,033 (Marshall Islands) to 107,155,091,924,882,000 (Iran), a spread exceeding 55 trillion percent, which makes absolute cross-country comparisons unreliable without currency conversion.
