Countries by Industry (including construction), value added (% of GDP)
Guyana ranks 1st globally with industry (including construction) accounting for 76.03% of GDP, the highest share among 204 countries measured. At the other end, Lebanon sits at rank 204 with just 2.09%, meaning the gap between top and bottom spans more than 73 percentage points. This range reflects how differently national economies are structured, from resource-extraction-dominated to service-driven economies.

Analysis
This metric measures industry value added as a percentage of GDP, covering ISIC (Rev.4) divisions 05-43: mining, manufacturing, construction, electricity, water, and gas industries. Value added is the contribution to the economy by a producer or an industry or an institutional sector, which is estimated by the total value of output produced and deducting the total value of intermediate consumption of goods and services. The unit is percentage of GDP, and higher values indicate a larger industrial share of the economy. Data come from the World Bank World Development Indicators, indicator code NV.IND.TOTL.ZS, with 204 countries included. Coverage is strong: 201 of 204 countries (98.5%) have data from the last 7 years, 100% of data points are classified as official, and 85.3% of countries have data from the latest year (2024). The viability checks identified 25 extreme outliers beyond 3 standard deviations, and the data range runs from 2.09% to 76.03%, a spread of 3,544%.
The top of the ranking is dominated by hydrocarbon and resource-intensive economies. Guyana leads at 76.03% (rank 1), followed by Libya at 73.50% (rank 2) and Brunei Darussalam at 61.68% (rank 3). Qatar (rank 4, 58.24%), Kuwait (rank 5, 57.13%), Oman (rank 6, 54.17%), Gabon (rank 7, 52.90%), and Iraq (rank 8, 51.57%) round out the top eight, all with heavy reliance on petroleum and gas extraction. Saudi Arabia (rank 11, 44.93%) and the United Arab Emirates (rank 12, 44.33%) also rank in the top 15. Cambodia (rank 15, 41.75%) and Indonesia (rank 18, 39.32%) reflect manufacturing and commodities-driven industrial shares. The consistent pattern at the top is a large extractive sector relative to total GDP.
In the middle ranges, several manufacturing exporters and diversified economies appear. South Korea ranks 39th at 33.90%, Germany ranks 76th at 25.62%, and Japan ranks 66th at 28.60%. One notable anomaly is Puerto Rico (US) at rank 9 with 47.16%, placing it above major oil exporters such as Saudi Arabia and the UAE; this is linked to its large pharmaceutical manufacturing sector as reflected in the data. Ireland ranks 41st at 33.63%, also notably high for a European economy. At the lower end, service-oriented economies cluster: the United States ranks 144th at 17.88%, the United Kingdom ranks 152nd at 17.12%, and Luxembourg ranks 189th at 9.66%. Lebanon ranks last at 2.09% (rank 204), and Sao Tome and Principe sits at rank 203 with 2.83%. Hong Kong SAR (rank 198, 6.20%) and Macao SAR (rank 200, 5.43%) reflect their heavy service and finance orientations.
Several data limitations apply to this metric. The 3,544% range between the lowest and highest values, and the 25 identified extreme outliers, suggest that structural differences across economies can make direct comparisons misleading. For very small or oil-dependent economies, a single sector can dominate the GDP share in ways that overstate overall industrialization. Countries with large informal sectors may underreport industrial activity. Differences in national accounting standards and data collection capacity can affect comparability. Additionally, 3 of 204 countries do not have data from the last 7 years, and 30 countries lack data from the latest year (2024), meaning some values reflect earlier periods. The metric does not distinguish between types of industry, so a country with dominant extractive mining and one with broad manufacturing may receive similar scores despite very different economic structures.
Methodology
Data are from the World Bank World Development Indicators, indicator code NV.IND.TOTL.ZS, for data year 2024. The metric measures industry (including construction) value added as a percentage of GDP. Per the source definition: industry corresponds to ISIC (Rev.4) divisions 05-43, comprised of mining, manufacturing, construction, electricity, water, and gas industries; value added is the contribution to the economy by a producer or an industry or an institutional sector, which is estimated by the total value of output produced and deducting the total value of intermediate consumption of goods and services. The ranking covers 204 countries. Coverage: 201 of 204 countries (98.5%) have data from the last 7 years; 174 of 204 (85.3%) have data from 2024 specifically. All 204 data points (100%) are classified as official quality. The viability checks identified 25 extreme outliers using a 3-standard-deviation threshold. The full data range is 2.09% (Lebanon, rank 204) to 76.03% (Guyana, rank 1), a spread of 3,544%. Average year-over-year change across the dataset is 6.3%, well within the 50% volatility threshold.
