Value added is the contribution to the economy by a producer or an industry or an institutional sector, which is estimated by the total value of output produced and deducting the total value of intermediate consumption of goods. The unit is absolute LCU, meaning figures are not converted to a common currency and cannot be compared directly across countries. The dataset covers 204 countries, with 201 of 204 (98.5%) drawing on data from the last seven years, 100% of datapoints rated as official quality, and 174 of 204 countries (85.3%) reporting data from 2024 specifically. Nine extreme outliers were flagged at the 3-sigma threshold.
Iran ranks 1st at 77,631,075,812,725,100 LCU, an order of magnitude larger than Indonesia in 2nd place at 8,704,705,400,000,000 LCU, and Viet Nam in 3rd at 4,333,235,485,433,200 LCU. Korea, Rep. follows in 4th at 866,839,700,000,000 LCU, and Uzbekistan ranks 5th at 462,696,501,600,000 LCU. These high nominal LCU values reflect both the scale of industrial activity and the relative weakness or denomination structure of each country's currency. Colombia ranks 6th at 393,520,000,000,000 LCU and Iraq ranks 7th at 187,480,730,700,000 LCU, further illustrating how currency scale drives nominal position.
Several counterintuitive placements appear in the middle of the ranking. Japan, the world's third-largest economy by GDP, ranks only 8th at 169,299,900,000,000 LCU, while the United States ranks 45th at 4,169,821,339,000 LCU and Germany ranks 72nd at 1,109,210,000,000 LCU. China ranks 22nd at 49,208,711,997,300 LCU. These placements below smaller economies reflect the stronger purchasing power of their currencies relative to countries with weaker or higher-denomination currencies. Paraguay ranks 10th at 109,175,649,083,081 LCU, ahead of India at rank 13 with 81,441,895,478,500 LCU, despite India's far larger industrial base in real terms.
The primary limitation of this metric is that LCU values are not comparable across countries. A country with a high-denomination or highly depreciated currency will rank far above countries with stronger currencies regardless of actual industrial output. Hyperinflationary environments in particular can produce extreme nominal values. The 9 flagged extreme outliers at the 3-sigma threshold likely reflect such currency distortions. Additionally, 30 of 204 countries do not have 2024 data, relying on earlier years, and methodological differences in national accounts reporting may affect consistency across country estimates.
Methodology
Data are sourced from the World Bank World Development Indicators, indicator code NV.IND.TOTL.CN, for the reference year 2024. The metric measures industry (including construction) value added in current local currency units. Industry (including construction) corresponds to ISIC (Rev.4) divisions 05-43 and is comprised of mining, manufacturing, construction, electricity, water, and gas industries. Value added is the contribution to the economy by a producer or an industry or an institutional sector, which is estimated by the total value of output produced and deducting the total value of intermediate consumption of goods. The dataset covers 204 countries. Of these, 201 of 204 (98.5%) have data from within the last seven years, and 174 of 204 (85.3%) report data specifically from 2024. All 204 datapoints are classified as official quality. Nine extreme outliers were identified using a 3-sigma threshold. The average year-over-year change across the dataset is 15.9%. Values range from 3,437,600 LCU (Tuvalu, rank 204) to 77,631,075,812,725,100 LCU (Iran, rank 1), a spread of over 2.2 trillion percent. Because values are in local currency units, cross-country comparisons are not valid without conversion to a common currency or price-level adjustment.
