Analysis

This metric measures gross national income (GNI) expressed in current international dollars, converted by purchasing power parities (PPPs). As stated in the World Bank source note, PPPs account for the different price levels across countries, and PPP-based comparisons of economic output are more appropriate for comparing the output of economies and the average material well-being of their inhabitants than exchange-rate conversions. The unit is an absolute current international dollar value; a higher value indicates a larger total national income in PPP terms. Data cover 198 countries drawn from the World Bank World Development Indicators, indicator code NY.GNP.MKTP.PP.CD, for the reference year 2024. Of those 198 countries, 197 (99.5%) have data from within the last seven years, 100% of datapoints are classified as official-quality, and average year-over-year change across the dataset is 8.1%.

The top of the ranking is heavily concentrated. China (rank 1) records $37.93 trillion, India (rank 3) reaches $15.96 trillion, and Japan (rank 4) sits at $6.88 trillion. The United States at rank 2 with $29.24 trillion is the only economy within roughly $9 trillion of China. Germany (rank 6, $6.36 trillion), Brazil (rank 7, $4.58 trillion), and Indonesia (rank 8, $4.54 trillion) follow. Large population size and broad economic activity across sectors are consistent features of the highest-ranked countries, though the metric does not adjust for population.

Notable placements appear in the middle of the ranking. Egypt (rank 18, $2.12 trillion) and Nigeria (rank 19, $2.06 trillion) rank above Australia (rank 20, $1.89 trillion) and Poland (rank 22, $1.81 trillion) in PPP-adjusted terms. Bangladesh (rank 23, $1.75 trillion) and Vietnam (rank 25, $1.60 trillion) both outrank the Netherlands (rank 28, $1.53 trillion). Singapore (rank 40, $761.8 billion) ranks above Austria (rank 41, $680.6 billion) despite having a much smaller land area and population. At the lower end, Kiribati (rank 193) records $815.1 million and Nauru (rank 197) $262.5 million, both above Tuvalu (rank 198) at $81.6 million.

Several limitations apply to this metric. GNI PPP is a total national income figure and does not reflect per capita wellbeing, inequality, or income distribution within a country. PPP conversion factors are themselves estimates based on international price surveys and can introduce measurement uncertainty, particularly for countries with limited price data. The 27 extreme outliers flagged at the 3-sigma threshold and the dataset's value range spanning from $81.6 million to $37.93 trillion indicate high variance across observations. Eleven of 198 countries lack 2024 data, with some figures drawn from earlier years. Reporting reliability varies across economies, and figures for countries such as Syria (rank 96), Afghanistan (rank 101), and South Sudan (rank 160) may reflect significant estimation uncertainty given data collection conditions in those countries.

Methodology

Rankings are based on the World Bank World Development Indicators indicator NY.GNP.MKTP.PP.CD, defined as gross national income (GNI) expressed in current international dollars, converted by purchasing power parities (PPPs). The source note states that PPPs account for the different price levels across countries and thus PPP-based comparisons of economic output are more appropriate for comparing the output of economies and the average material well-being of their inhabitants than exchange-rate conversions. The reference year is 2024. Coverage includes 198 countries; 197 of 198 (99.5%) have data from within the last seven years and 187 of 198 (94.4%) have data specifically from 2024. All 198 datapoints are classified as official quality (100%). The dataset exhibits 27 extreme outliers using a 3-sigma threshold, with values ranging from $81.6 million (Tuvalu, rank 198) to $37.93 trillion (China, rank 1), a spread of approximately 46,454,036%. Average year-over-year change across the dataset is 8.1%. Values are in absolute current international dollars; no per capita adjustment is applied.
