Countries by GDP, PPP (current international $)

China ranks 1st in GDP measured by purchasing power parity, recording $38,190,084,585,498 in 2024, more than double the United States figure of $29,184,890,000,000 at rank 2. At the other end, Tuvalu registers $60,378,319, making the gap between first and last roughly 632,000 to one. That spread reflects the enormous differences in population size, economic structure, and price levels captured across 200 countries in this dataset.

Analysis

GDP measured by purchasing power parity (PPP) converts each country's output into a common unit by adjusting for price level differences across countries. As the source definition states: 'This indicator provides values for gross domestic product (GDP) expressed in current international dollars, converted by purchasing power parities (PPPs). PPPs account for the different price levels across countries and thus PPP-based comparisons of economic output are more appropriate for comparing the output of economies and the average material well-being of their inhabitants than exchange-rate' conversions. Values are expressed in absolute current international dollars. The dataset covers 200 countries, with 188 of 200 (94.0%) having data from the reference year 2024, and 199 of 200 (99.5%) having data from within the last seven years. All 200 datapoints are classified as official-quality figures. Viability checks identified 27 extreme outliers at the 3-sigma threshold, driven by the extreme range from $60,378,319 to $38,190,084,585,498, a spread of over 63 million percent.

The top of the ranking is dominated by large-population economies. China (rank 1) at $38,190,084,585,498 leads by a wide margin over the United States (rank 2) at $29,184,890,000,000. India (rank 3) records $16,192,422,603,162, already less than half of China's figure. The Russian Federation (rank 4, $6,921,249,292,202) and Japan (rank 5, $6,451,575,612,481) are separated by a smaller margin. Germany (rank 6, $6,142,807,000,522), Brazil (rank 7, $4,735,725,154,575), and Indonesia (rank 8, $4,662,887,595,103) round out the top eight. PPP adjustments tend to lift economies where domestic prices are lower relative to the US dollar, which partly explains the high absolute PPP values for India, Russia, and Brazil compared with their nominal GDP rankings.

Several counterintuitive placements appear in the middle of the ranking. Egypt (rank 18, $2,225,198,389,821) and Nigeria (rank 19, $2,114,329,449,409) both rank above Australia (rank 20, $1,961,194,326,932), reflecting the PPP adjustment's sensitivity to large populations with lower domestic price levels. Ireland (rank 41, $720,000,566,883) surpasses Chile (rank 42, $715,112,275,050) and Austria (rank 43, $678,357,862,822) despite Ireland's much smaller population. In the lower middle, Guyana (rank 118, $66,615,811,224) sits near Armenia (rank 113, $69,234,115,091) and Estonia (rank 114, $68,574,110,586). At the bottom, Pacific island economies dominate: Tuvalu ranks 200th at $60,378,319, Marshall Islands 198th at $307,692,288, and Nauru 199th at $169,324,928.

Several limitations apply to this metric. PPP conversion factors are estimated and revised periodically, meaning values are not directly comparable across different benchmark years. Countries with informal economies, unreported output, or weak statistical capacity may have understated figures. The dataset includes some territories and special administrative regions alongside sovereign states, such as Hong Kong SAR (rank 50), Macao SAR (rank 105), Puerto Rico (rank 85), and Bermuda (rank 164), which may affect cross-country comparisons. One country in the dataset, Tuvalu (rank 200), falls outside the most recent data year, as only 199 of 200 countries have data from within the last seven years. The 27 extreme outliers identified at the 3-sigma threshold reflect the wide natural dispersion of this metric rather than data errors, but users should apply caution when comparing very large and very small economies directly.

Methodology

Metric: GDP, PPP (current international $). Indicator code: NY.GDP.MKTP.PP.CD. Data source: World Bank World Development Indicators. Reference year: 2024. Unit: absolute current international dollars. Higher values indicate larger PPP-adjusted economic output. The indicator is defined as follows: 'This indicator provides values for gross domestic product (GDP) expressed in current international dollars, converted by purchasing power parities (PPPs). PPPs account for the different price levels across countries and thus PPP-based comparisons of economic output are more appropriate for comparing the output of economies and the average material well-being of their inhabitants than exchange-rate' conversions. Country coverage: 200 countries. Data recency: 199 of 200 countries (99.5%) have data from within the last seven years; 188 of 200 (94.0%) have data from the 2024 reference year. Data quality: 100% of datapoints are classified as official. Outliers: 27 extreme outliers were flagged at the 3-sigma threshold, consistent with the metric's natural range from $60,378,319 (Tuvalu, rank 200) to $38,190,084,585,498 (China, rank 1), a percentage spread of over 63 million percent. Average year-over-year change across the dataset is 8.2%, well within the 50% volatility threshold.
