Countries by Agriculture, forestry, and fishing, value added (current US$)

China ranks first in agriculture, forestry, and fishing value added at $1.27 trillion, nearly double second-ranked India at $636.7 billion. At the other end, San Marino records just $306,020. That gap of over four billion percent separates the world's largest agricultural economy from the smallest.

Analysis

This metric measures the contribution of agriculture, forestry, and fishing to each country's economy in current US dollars. According to the World Bank World Development Indicators (indicator NV.AGR.TOTL.CD), agriculture, forestry, and fishing corresponds to ISIC (Rev. 4) divisions 01-03 and includes the exploitation of vegetal and animal natural resources, comprising the activities of growing of crops, raising and breeding of animals, harvesting of timber and other plants, animals or animal products from a farm or their natural habitats. Value added is the contribution to the economy by a producer. Higher values indicate a larger absolute agricultural sector. The dataset covers 201 countries, with 172 of 201 (85.6%) reporting data for the latest year (2024) and 198 of 201 (98.5%) reporting within the last seven years. All data points are classified as official quality. Twenty extreme outliers were identified using a 3-standard-deviation threshold, reflecting the enormous range in national agricultural scales.

The top of the ranking is dominated by large, populous nations with extensive arable land. China (rank 1, $1.27 trillion) and India (rank 2, $636.7 billion) together account for a substantial share of global agricultural value added. The United States ranks third at $223.7 billion, followed by Indonesia at $176.1 billion (rank 4) and Brazil at $125.7 billion (rank 5). Pakistan (rank 6, $88.2 billion) and Turkiye (rank 7, $79.1 billion) also register large totals. Among high-income nations, Italy (rank 16, $47.6 billion) and Spain (rank 17, $47.5 billion) outrank Germany (rank 19, $42.8 billion) and France (rank 21, $41.1 billion), reflecting the Mediterranean agricultural base of those two economies.

Several middle-ranked countries stand out. Norway (rank 54, $10.0 billion) places ahead of several larger economies largely due to its fishing sector. Israel (rank 66, $6.9 billion) ranks above the Democratic Republic of Congo (rank 68, $6.8 billion), despite the DRC's far larger land area and rural population. Among smaller economies, Iceland (rank 128, $1.32 billion) records a value driven by fisheries rather than crop production. At the lower end, territories and small island states cluster below $200 million: Hong Kong SAR (rank 168, $152.4 million), Singapore (rank 169, $150.2 million), and Aruba (rank 200, $1.1 million) reflect minimal agricultural sectors. San Marino sits last at rank 201 with $306,020.

This metric captures absolute value added in current US dollars, so it reflects both the scale of agricultural activity and fluctuations in exchange rates and commodity prices. Countries with large populations and large land areas will naturally rank higher regardless of productivity per worker or per hectare. The figure does not indicate efficiency, food security, or the share of the population employed in agriculture. Reporting reliability varies: some values are estimated or interpolated, and 29 of 201 countries do not have data from the most recent year. The year-over-year average change of 10.9% suggests meaningful volatility in some national figures, which can distort year-to-year comparisons.

Methodology

Data source: World Bank World Development Indicators, indicator code NV.AGR.TOTL.CD, data year 2024. The metric is defined as follows: agriculture, forestry, and fishing corresponds to ISIC (Rev. Values are expressed in absolute current US dollars; higher values indicate a larger agricultural sector. The dataset covers 201 countries. Of these, 172 of 201 (85.6%) report data for the latest year and 198 of 201 (98.5%) report data from within the last seven years. All 201 data points are classified as official quality (100%). Twenty extreme outliers were detected at the 3-standard-deviation threshold. The value range spans from $306,019.73 (San Marino) to $1,270,079,880,349.97 (China), a spread of over 415 billion percent. Average year-over-year change is 10.9%, indicating moderate volatility. Values in current US dollars are affected by exchange rate movements and commodity price fluctuations, which should be considered when comparing across years or countries.
