Analysis
This metric measures the total value of exports of goods and services for each country, expressed in current US dollars with no adjustment for price changes over time. According to the World Bank World Development Indicators (indicator code BX.GSR.GNFS.CD), exports of goods includes changes in the economic ownership of goods from residents of the compiling economy to non-residents, irrespective of physical movement of goods across national borders, and exports of services includes services provided by residents to non-residents. The dataset covers 192 countries, with 96.4% of entries drawing on data from the last seven years. All 100% of datapoints are classified as official quality, and 30 extreme outliers were identified at the 3-sigma threshold. The data year is 2024, though full-year figures are available for 152 of 192 countries (79.2%).
The top tier is dominated by large, trade-oriented economies. China (rank 1) leads at $3.79 trillion, with the United States (rank 2) at $3.23 trillion. Germany (rank 3) reaches $1.94 trillion, followed by the United Kingdom (rank 4) at $1.14 trillion and France (rank 5) at $1.07 trillion. Singapore (rank 7) at $978.6 billion and Ireland (rank 9) at $882.3 billion place higher than Japan (rank 8, $922.4 billion) and South Korea (rank 10, $835.1 billion), reflecting the weight of services exports in their totals. India (rank 11) at $822 billion rounds out the top tier.
Several counterintuitive placements appear in the middle of the ranking. Ireland (rank 9, $882.3 billion) outranks Japan (rank 8 by a narrow margin) and both South Korea and India, despite Ireland's much smaller population and territory. Luxembourg (rank 35, $181.7 billion) ranks ahead of much larger economies including Israel (rank 37, $153.7 billion) and Portugal (rank 38, $144.1 billion). Among lower-ranked countries, the Democratic Republic of the Congo (rank 76) records $35.2 billion, higher than Azerbaijan (rank 77, $34.1 billion) or Cambodia (rank 79, $31.7 billion). At the bottom, Kiribati (rank 191) records $15.5 million and Tuvalu (rank 192) just $2.2 million.
Several limitations affect interpretation of this metric. Values are expressed in current US dollars, meaning rankings can shift due to exchange rate movements rather than changes in actual trade volumes. Countries with data from outside the core 2024 reference year, roughly 20.8% of the dataset, introduce timing inconsistencies. The metric combines goods and services into a single figure, which means countries with large financial or intellectual-property service sectors may rank higher than their physical trade volumes suggest. Reporting methodologies vary across national statistical offices, and for some lower-income or conflict-affected countries, estimates may carry greater uncertainty. The 30 extreme outliers flagged at the 3-sigma threshold indicate substantial dispersion in the dataset that can compress meaningful differences at the lower end of the ranking.
Methodology
Data are drawn from the World Bank World Development Indicators, indicator code BX.GSR.GNFS.CD, with a reference year of 2024. The indicator is defined as follows: exports of goods includes changes in the economic ownership of goods from residents of the compiling economy to non-residents, irrespective of physical movement of goods across national borders; exports of services includes services provided by residents to non-residents; this indicator is expressed in current prices, meaning no adjustment has been made to account for price changes over time. Values are reported in absolute current US dollars. The dataset covers 192 countries, with 185 of 192 (96.4%) drawing on data from within the last seven years. All datapoints (100%) are classified as official quality. Latest-year (2024) data are available for 152 of 192 countries (79.2%). Thirty extreme outliers were identified using a 3-sigma threshold. Average year-over-year change across the dataset is 17.0%. The value range spans from $2.2 million (Tuvalu, rank 192) to $3.79 trillion (China, rank 1), a spread of approximately 169.9 million percent.
