Countries by Industry (including construction), value added (constant LCU)

Iran, Islamic Rep. ranks 1st in industry (including construction) value added at 33,463,674,887,040,500 constant LCU, a figure more than six times larger than Indonesia's 4,982,411,200,000,000 in second place. At the other end, Micronesia, Fed. Sts. records just 9,233,200 constant LCU, placing 194th. The gap across 194 countries spans more than 362 quadrillion percent in range.

Analysis

This metric measures industry (including construction) value added expressed in constant local currency units (LCU). Industry corresponds to ISIC (Rev.4) divisions 05-43 and is comprised of mining, manufacturing, construction, electricity, water, and gas industries. Value added is the contribution to the economy by a producer or an industry or an institutional sector, which is estimated by the total value of output produced and deducting the total value of intermediate consumption of goods and services. Because values are in constant LCU rather than a common currency such as USD, figures across countries are not directly comparable in absolute terms — each country's value is anchored to its own national price base. The dataset covers 194 countries, with 192 of 194 (99.0%) reporting data from the last seven years and 100% of datapoints classified as official quality. The 2024 data year has direct coverage for 171 of 194 countries (88.1%). Ten extreme outliers were identified at the 3-sigma threshold.

The top of the ranking is led by Iran (rank 1, 33,463,674,887,040,500 LCU), Indonesia (rank 2, 4,982,411,200,000,000 LCU), and Viet Nam (rank 3, 2,287,201,815,558,000 LCU). Korea, Rep. follows at rank 4 with 766,613,158,988,149 LCU, and Colombia sits at rank 5 with 220,593,000,000,000 LCU. High absolute LCU values in this ranking reflect a combination of large industrial sectors and the scale of each country's national currency unit, since no currency conversion is applied. Japan places 6th at 169,649,359,053,000 LCU despite being one of the world's largest economies by conventional measures, illustrating how the choice of constant LCU as the unit shapes rankings significantly.

Several counterintuitive placements appear in the middle of the ranking. China ranks 13th at 46,482,154,173,500 LCU and India ranks 11th at 52,701,118,975,600 LCU, both well below countries like Paraguay (rank 8, 77,864,292,149,346.6 LCU) and Cambodia (rank 9, 66,454,728,687,700 LCU). Germany (rank 62, 837,573,120,000 LCU), the United States is absent from this dataset, and the United Kingdom (rank 79, 375,793,464,000 LCU) fall far down the table. At the lower end, Pacific island nations cluster near the bottom: Kiribati ranks 191st at 39,445,500.91 LCU, Marshall Islands 192nd at 28,561,855.08 LCU, Palau 193rd at 19,851,845.67 LCU, and Micronesia, Fed. Sts. last at 9,233,200 LCU.

The primary limitation of this metric is that constant LCU values are not internationally comparable. A higher LCU value does not necessarily indicate a larger industrial sector in real economic terms; it reflects both the size of the sector and the denomination of the national currency. Countries with historically high-inflation currencies or those that have not redenominated may show very large nominal LCU figures. Iran's rank 1 position at 33,463,674,887,040,500 LCU, flagged as an extreme outlier, is a clear example of this effect. Additionally, 23 of 194 countries lack direct 2024 data, relying on estimates or prior-year figures, and the metric excludes agriculture and services, meaning it does not capture total economic output.

Methodology

Data source: World Bank World Development Indicators, indicator code NV.IND.TOTL.KN, data year 2024. The metric measures industry (including construction) value added in constant local currency units (LCU). Per the source definition, industry corresponds to ISIC (Rev.4) divisions 05-43 and is comprised of mining, manufacturing, construction, electricity, water, and gas industries. Value added is the contribution to the economy by a producer or an industry or an institutional sector, which is estimated by the total value of output produced and deducting the total value of intermediate consumption of goods and services. The ranking covers 194 countries. Of these, 192 of 194 (99.0%) have data from the last seven years, and 100% of datapoints are classified as official quality. Direct 2024 coverage applies to 171 of 194 countries (88.1%). Ten extreme outliers were identified using a 3-sigma threshold. The value range spans from 9,233,200 to 33,463,674,887,040,500 LCU, a spread of over 362 quadrillion percent. Because values are denominated in each country's own constant LCU, cross-country comparisons in absolute terms are not valid; the ranking reflects relative positions within this unit convention, not a common-currency measure of industrial output.
