Analysis

This metric measures the total value of exports of goods and services in current US dollars. According to the World Bank World Development Indicators (indicator code NE.EXP.GNFS.CD), exports of goods includes changes in the economic ownership of goods from residents of the compiling economy to non-residents, irrespective of physical movement of goods across national borders, and exports of services includes services provided by residents to non-residents. This indicator is expressed in current prices, meaning no adjustment has been made to account for price changes over time. Values are absolute and higher figures indicate greater export activity. The dataset covers 187 countries, with 183 of 187 countries (97.9%) reporting data from the last seven years and 100% of datapoints classified as official quality. The 2024 consistency check shows 159 of 187 countries (85.0%) have data from the latest year. The viability checks identified 30 extreme outliers at the 3-sigma threshold, reflecting the wide dispersion across the ranking.

The top of the ranking is concentrated among the world's largest economies. China (rank 1) leads at $3.75 trillion, with the United States (rank 2) at $3.19 trillion. Germany (rank 3) follows at $1.94 trillion, a substantial step down. The United Kingdom (rank 4, $1.14 trillion) and France (rank 5, $1.07 trillion) round out the top five. Notable placements further down include Ireland (rank 9, $877.1 billion), which exceeds Korea (rank 10, $831.9 billion) and India (rank 11, $827.4 billion) despite Ireland's much smaller population. Singapore (rank 7, $978.6 billion) similarly ranks above Japan (rank 8, $917.0 billion), reflecting the outsized role of trade-oriented economies relative to their size.

In the middle of the ranking, countries such as Morocco (rank 54, $67.5 billion) and Colombia (rank 55, $67.4 billion) sit closely together, while Puerto Rico (rank 56, $65.4 billion) and New Zealand (rank 57, $64.5 billion) follow. Armenia (rank 93, $19.1 billion) ranks above several larger-population nations. At the lower end, countries such as Kiribati (rank 187, $17.1 million), Palau (rank 186, $72.7 million), and Tonga (rank 185, $87.2 million) record very small export totals. Bermuda (rank 134, $4.8 billion) and the Cayman Islands (rank 147, $3.4 billion) appear in the ranking as separate reporting territories alongside sovereign states.

Because this metric uses current US dollar values without price adjustment, fluctuations in exchange rates and inflation can affect year-over-year comparisons and rankings across countries with different currency exposures. The average year-over-year change across the dataset is 17.2%, indicating considerable volatility for some countries. Territories and special administrative regions such as Hong Kong SAR (rank 13), Macao SAR (rank 68), and Puerto Rico (rank 56) are included alongside sovereign states, which can complicate direct comparisons. Countries with missing 2024 data fall back to earlier years, and 28 of 187 countries do not have data from the most recent year. The metric does not distinguish between re-exports and domestically produced exports, nor does it capture export prices or terms of trade, limiting what can be inferred about the underlying productive economy from export values alone.

Methodology

Data are drawn from the World Bank World Development Indicators, indicator code NE.EXP.GNFS.CD, for the reference year 2024. The metric covers exports of goods and services in current US dollars. Per the source definition: exports of goods includes changes in the economic ownership of goods from residents of the compiling economy to non-residents, irrespective of physical movement of goods across national borders; exports of services includes services provided by residents to non-residents; this indicator is expressed in current prices, meaning no adjustment has been made to account for price changes over time. The ranking covers 187 countries, exceeding the 80-country coverage threshold. Of these, 183 of 187 (97.9%) have data from the last seven years, and 100% of datapoints are classified as official quality. The 2024 consistency check confirms 159 of 187 countries (85.0%) have data from the latest year; the remainder use the most recent available year. Viability checks identified 30 extreme outliers at the 3-sigma threshold, consistent with the metric's range of $17.1 million (Kiribati, rank 187) to $3.75 trillion (China, rank 1), a spread of over 21,965,308%. The average year-over-year change is 17.2%, within the 50% volatility threshold. Values are reported in absolute current US dollars; no normalization by GDP or population is applied.
