Analysis

This metric measures the total value of a country's exports of goods and services expressed in constant 2015 US dollars, meaning values have been adjusted to remove the effect of price changes over time, allowing comparisons across years on a real-volume basis. According to the World Bank World Development Indicators (indicator code NE.EXP.GNFS.KD), exports of goods includes changes in the economic ownership of goods from residents of the compiling economy to non-residents, irrespective of physical movement of goods across national borders, and exports of services includes services provided by residents to non-residents. The dataset covers 184 countries, with 166 of those (90.2%) reporting data from the last seven years and 100% of datapoints classified as official-quality. Data for 147 of 184 countries (79.9%) reflect the latest reference year of 2024. Twenty-two extreme outliers were identified at the three standard deviation threshold, which is expected given the scale differences across the ranking.

The top of the ranking is dominated by large, highly integrated economies. The United States (rank 1, $2.60 trillion) and China (rank 2, $2.36 trillion) are the only countries above $2 trillion, with Germany (rank 3, $1.62 trillion) a distant third. The United Kingdom (rank 4, $983 billion), Japan (rank 5, $933 billion), and France (rank 6, $930 billion) follow closely. Singapore (rank 8, $812 billion) and Ireland (rank 10, $782 billion) place notably high relative to their population size, reflecting their roles as major trade and services hubs. India ranks 11th at $715 billion, while Viet Nam (rank 21, $383 billion) and Poland (rank 22, $382 billion) place ahead of larger economies such as Australia (rank 23, $327 billion) and Brazil (rank 27, $301 billion).

In the middle of the ranking, several patterns stand out. Saudi Arabia places 32nd at $241 billion, behind smaller European economies such as Denmark (rank 31, $245 billion). Puerto Rico (US) appears at rank 50 with $69.5 billion, and Macao SAR, China ranks 64th at $41.6 billion, both reflecting their status as distinct customs territories. Bermuda ranks 136th at $3.99 billion, sitting between Mali (rank 137) and Kosovo (rank 138). At the lower end of the ranking, small island states and landlocked low-income countries cluster tightly: Tonga ranks 181st at $75 million, Palau 182nd at $66 million, Nauru 183rd at $61 million, and Kiribati last at $14.7 million.

Several limitations apply to this metric. Constant 2015 US dollar values depend on the deflators and base-year prices used, and methodological differences across national statistical agencies can affect comparability. Economies with large informal sectors or unreported cross-border trade may be understated. The data for 2024 is not yet available for all 184 countries: only 79.9% have data for the latest year, and the remainder carry forward earlier estimates or projections. Special administrative regions such as Hong Kong SAR and Macao SAR are counted separately from mainland China. Economies under severe political or statistical disruption, such as Syria (rank 118), Somalia (rank 143), and South Sudan (rank 130), may have values that are estimates subject to significant revision.

Methodology

Rankings are based on the World Bank World Development Indicators indicator NE.EXP.GNFS.KD, which measures exports of goods and services in constant 2015 US dollars. The source definition states: exports of goods includes changes in the economic ownership of goods from residents of the compiling economy to non-residents, irrespective of physical movement of goods across national borders; exports of services includes services provided by residents to non-residents; this indicator is expressed in constant prices, meaning the series has been adjusted to account for price changes over time. The dataset covers 184 countries for the reference year 2024. Of these, 166 countries (90.2%) have data from within the last seven years, and 100% of datapoints are classified as official quality. Data for 147 of 184 countries (79.9%) reflect the 2024 reference year directly. Twenty-two extreme outliers were identified using a three standard deviation threshold. The value range spans from $14,680,491 (Kiribati, rank 184) to $2,601,452,073,018 (United States, rank 1), a spread of approximately 17,720,371%. Average year-over-year change across the dataset is 12.8%, well within the 50% volatility threshold. Higher values indicate greater export volume and are ranked accordingly.
