Countries by Exports of goods and services (constant LCU)

Iran, Islamic Rep. ranks first in exports of goods and services measured in constant local currency units, with a value of 20,180,376,463,136,900 — more than three times the value of second-ranked Viet Nam at 6,267,715,037,059,400. At the other end, Kiribati records the lowest value at just 19,582,362. The spread between first and last represents a range of over 103 quadrillion percent, reflecting how dramatically local currency scales distort cross-country comparisons in this metric.

Analysis

This metric tracks the total value of exports of goods and services expressed in constant local currency units (LCU), sourced from the World Bank World Development Indicators under indicator code NE.EXP.GNFS.KN. According to the source definition: 'Exports of goods includes changes in the economic ownership of goods from residents of the compiling economy to non-residents, irrespective of physical movement of goods across national borders. Exports of services includes services provided by residents to non-residents. This indicator is expressed in constant prices, meaning the series has been adjusted to account for price changes over time.' The ranking covers 172 countries, with 169 of 172 (98.3%) providing data from the last seven years, and 100% of data points classified as official-quality. The viability checks identified 16 extreme outliers beyond the 3-sigma threshold, and average year-over-year change across the dataset is 12.8%.

Iran (rank 1) records a value of 20,180,376,463,136,900, which is more than three times the value of Viet Nam (rank 2) at 6,267,715,037,059,400 and more than six times Indonesia (rank 3) at 3,085,059,130,000,000. Korea, Rep. (rank 4) follows at 906,303,100,000,000. Colombia (rank 5) at 141,310,000,000,000 and Iraq (rank 6) at 112,084,516,480,700 round out the top six. Japan, despite being one of the world's largest economies, ranks 7th at 103,090,602,619,000. These high rankings are driven by the scale of each country's domestic currency denomination rather than by export volume in comparable international terms.

Several counterintuitive placements appear in the middle and lower portions of the ranking. The United States ranks 43rd at 2,622,774,083,000, while Germany ranks 53rd at 1,491,926,060,000 and France ranks 68th at 844,626,700,000 — all well below countries such as Somalia (rank 9) at 97,643,540,280,000 and Paraguay (rank 10) at 91,720,295,095,080. India ranks 15th at 40,680,981,779,800, lower than Guinea at rank 12 with 53,487,091,384,730. At the bottom, Sudan (rank 169) records 97,811,900, Marshall Islands (rank 170) records 90,487,831, Palau (rank 171) records 64,416,008, and Kiribati (rank 172) records 19,582,362.

The primary limitation of this metric is that values are expressed in each country's own constant local currency units, making direct cross-country comparisons meaningless in absolute terms. A country with a high-denomination or historically inflated currency will mechanically rank far above countries using lower-denomination currencies, regardless of actual export volumes. This explains anomalies such as Iran's extreme first-place value. Additionally, 25 of 172 countries do not have data from 2024 specifically (only 85.5% consistency in the latest year), meaning some values reflect earlier years. The 16 extreme outliers identified in viability checks further underscore how distorted rankings can be when local currency scales vary so widely across 172 economies.

Methodology

Data are drawn from the World Bank World Development Indicators, indicator code NE.EXP.GNFS.KN, for the reference year 2024. The metric is defined as follows: 'Exports of goods includes changes in the economic ownership of goods from residents of the compiling economy to non-residents, irrespective of physical movement of goods across national borders. Exports of services includes services provided by residents to non-residents. This indicator is expressed in constant prices, meaning the series has been adjusted to account for price changes over time.' Values are in each country's own constant local currency units (LCU). The ranking covers 172 countries, exceeding the 80-country coverage threshold. Of these, 169 of 172 (98.3%) have data from the last seven years, and 100% of data points are classified as official quality. The dataset exhibits a range from 19,582,362 (Kiribati) to 20,180,376,463,136,900 (Iran), a spread of over 103 quadrillion percent. Viability checks identified 16 extreme outliers at the 3-sigma threshold, and average year-over-year change is 12.8%. Only 147 of 172 countries (85.5%) have data specifically for 2024; remaining values reflect the most recent available year. Because values are not converted to a common currency, this ranking reflects local currency scale as much as export activity.
